English as a Global Language

English operates across borders with a speed and reach that complicate older expectations about what “a language” does. The tension driving this study lies between everyday claims that English enables participation in global information flows and the counter-evidence that outcomes vary sharply by region, institution, and learner pathway. At a moment when digital communication and platform-based learning intensify English exposure, the question becomes less whether English spreads and more how its functions shift across domains and who can benefit from them.

The project examines English as a global language by systematizing how the term is defined and measured, and by mapping patterns of use across key international domains. It then compares learning and language outcomes across regions and between formal education and informal digital environments. Finally, it evaluates linguistic and sociocultural consequences of global English and assesses how these dynamics shape knowledge production and academic communication.

The object of the study is the worldwide use of English in institutional and communicative settings, alongside the learning routes that lead to that use. The subject of the study comprises the measurable patterns of English adoption (domains, proficiency levels, and varieties), the indicators that track change over time, and the relationships between English practices and consequences for language change, identity negotiation, and access to scholarly participation.

Work begins by clarifying what “English as a global language” means within the study, linking the present distribution of English to historical and contemporary drivers such as colonial history, trade, technology, education, and media. From this foundation, the project sets out the variables used later–domains of use, proficiency levels, and varieties of English–so that different strands of evidence can be interpreted within a common framework. This definitional work matters because the global status of English cannot be read directly from one indicator; it emerges through how English operates in concrete domains and through the social settings that enable or constrain use.

The empirical core traces current patterns of global use and the functions English performs across international business, science, higher education, diplomacy, aviation, and online communication. Data sources include language proficiency surveys, publication and citation trends, estimates of learners worldwide, and usage metrics from digital platforms. Trends over time and differences among regions are identified through an observational approach that standardizes indicators, enabling fair comparisons despite variations in measurement practices.

Building on those observations, the study conducts comparative analysis across regional learner contexts, contrasting Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas and placing emphasis on the divide between formal schooling and informal digital environments. The analysis treats local language ecologies, policy decisions, and socioeconomic factors as mediating conditions for English adoption and outcomes. The concluding interpretation connects these patterns to linguistic and sociocultural consequences, such as the emergence of English varieties and contact-induced features, and to impacts on knowledge production, where English can function both as a conduit for scientific exchange and as a potential barrier to researchers who work outside dominant publication norms.
